Indigenous Literacy Project - Books free to communities
25 June 2009
The ILP is a partnership between The Fred Hollows Foundation, Australian Booksellers Association (ABA) and the Australian Publishers Association (APA). We are working to get books into remote and isolated Indigenous communities across Australia. Working closely with the ABA and the APA, The Fred Hollows Foundation purchases and supplies books to remote communities where The Foundation operates.
How does it work?
Community groups select and order reading material from catalogues and sample books. The books are then supplied to schools, libraries, early learning centres such as crèches, Women's Centres and other identified groups such as Art and Language Centres, to build their pool of reading resources.
What does your group need to do?
- provide a space for the storage of books - preferably a bookshelf
- ensure community members are able to access the books
- encourage a borrowing system for the books.
What costs are involved?
There are no costs involved for community groups just the expectation that books will be stored and made accessible to community members.
